“Do you own a motorcycle, young man?” Granny asked me when I passed the bowl of roasted vegetables her way.

“I do not.”

“Do you know anyone that does?”

“I do know a couple of men who ride motorcycles. Let me guess. You want to ride one?” I asked just before I took a sip of my tea.

“Oh Lord no.” Granny waved her hand. “I want to sit in a biker’s lap inside a biker bar and play with his beard while we drink beer, and he gropes me.”

The tea in my mouth sprayed across the table, and I watched Brooklyn slowly close her eyes and use her napkin to wipe it off her face as I tried to control my coughing. Granny started beating me on the back, and Mymy raised my arm up above my head and held it there.

“Granny!” Paula hissed. “I told you that was not going to happen. Look what you made him do!”

Paula had her own napkin and was dabbing at Brooklyn’s forehead now. I finally stopped coughing, and Mymy let my arm go. Granny hit me a few more times before she went back to her dinner. I had to put my hand over my mouth to stop from laughing out loud as Paula’s daughter glared at me.

“I’m so sorry,” I said through my laughter. “Brooklyn, I’m so sorry.”

The little girl’s lips curled in, and she growled at me with murder in her eyes.

“This is why we don’t have company for dinner,” Brooklyn hissed at me. She looked up at her mom and sighed dramatically. “Can I have another plate, please?”

“Sure, baby,” Paula said and pulled her lips between her teeth to hide her smile. She took Brooklyn’s plate to the sink, and I watched as the little girl crawled up onto the table and reached for my tea.

“I’ll hold that for you, okay?” Brooklyn still looked a little unhinged, so I just nodded as I held the napkin over my mouth so she couldn’t see my smile. “Thanks.”

“There for a second, you looked so much like Ellie used to when she got mad,” Lorene said with a smile. “I do believe you inherited her temper, little lady.”

“Mom has a temper too,” Brooklyn argued. “I’ve seen it.”

“Yeah, but that look on your face was all Ellie,” Mymy told her. “Of all the things for her to pass down to you, it just had to be the temper.”

“She got other things from Ellie too,” Paula said as she reached for the different dishes to spoon up another plate for her daughter. “She makes those same noises when she sleeps, and her toes look like Ellie’s.”

I remembered Paula mentioning that Ellie was her sister, and I thought it was nice that they kept her memory alive for the niece that would never know her.

“Is there any part of me that looks like my father?” Brooklyn asked innocently as she reached for the ketchup. “I think I just look like you.”

“I never met your father, baby girl, so I have no idea.
